TOUGH GAME AGAINST FISHER GOES THE FALCONS WAY – by Tom Benefiel (10-25-13)

Playoff-bound GCMS outlasts their neighbor to the south, Fisher, in a 14-13 slug-fest in Gibson City.

In a mostly defensive first half, GCMS (7-2) got on the scoreboard first with a 58-yard Tyler Hinshaw touchdown run with 1:12 left in the second quarter. The two-point conversion failed and the Falcons had a slim 6-0 lead going into halftime.

Ross Royal scored on a 39-yard touchdown run with 10:08 left in the third quarter. The two-point conversion was successful and the Falcons had a 14-0 lead. However, the rest of the game was all Fisher (6-3) offensively.

The Bunnies had a two-point conversion fail after their final touchdown, and had a field goal blocked with nine seconds left in the game by GCMS freshman Levi Davis to seal Fisher’s fate.

Fisher had 56 offensive plays to the Falcons’ 30. The Bunnies Conrad Thomas rushed 26 times for a game-leading 121 yards. Quarterback Brody Farrar was three of six passing for 38 yards.

The Falcons’ leading rusher was Tyler Hinshaw with 90 yards on only 10 carries. Ross Royal only passed twice, with his one completion going to Hinshaw for 23 yards. Penalties were a problem for GCMS as they had seven for 65 yards.

The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game was Wiley Hasty, while the Falcon Fan of the Game was Terry Bell.

FIELDCREST WEARS DOWN GCMS AS THE FALCONS LOSE IN MINONK – by Tom Benefiel (10-11-13)

GCMS hangs tough with powerful Fieldcrest for three quarters, but it was too much Grant Jochums in the end as the Knights put the Falcons away in the fourth quarter and go ahead to win, 34-20.

Jochums powered through the Falcons’ (5-2) defense for four touchdowns and 328 yards on 36 carries as the Knights (6-1) remain unbeaten in the Heart of Illinois Conference.

Jochums opened the scoring with a 33-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and added a seven-yard run in the second. The Falcons got on the board with 5:30 left in the second quarter as Tyler Hinshaw hauled in a Ross Royal pass for a 60-yard touchdown. At the half, Fieldcrest led GCMS 12-7.

After a scoreless third quarter, the teams combined for 35 points in a wild fourth quarter. Jochums had two more touchdown runs of 42 and 10 yards.

With 9:43 left in the fourth, Ross Royal connected with Hinshaw for another touchdown, this one for 62 yards. Late in the game after the outcome was decided, the Royal boys – Ross to Drake – connected for a touchdown pass. The score came with 1:26 left in the game and was for 28 yards.

GCMS’ running game was non-existent, as the larger Fieldcrest defense bottled up the Falcons’ runners. Ross Royal was 10 of 13 on passing for 212 yards and three touchdown passes.

Fieldcrest ran wild all night with Jochums doing most of the damage. He finished with a 9.11 yards-per-carry average. Drew Barth was six of 14 passing for 66 yards and two interceptions for the Knights.

The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game was senior Austin Rosenbaum, while the Falcon Fan of the Game was John Kirkpatrick.

FALCONS HOLD ON TO WIN IN HEYWORTH – by Tom Benefiel (10-4-13)

Ross Royal scores on defense and offense, and Tyler Hinshaw adds two touchdowns as the GCMS Falcons outlast the Heyworth Hornets, 29-23 in Heart of Illinois Conference action.

In the first quarter, GCMS (5-1) got on the board first as Ross Royal returned a Heyworth (4-2) fumble 90 yards for a touchdown with 5:01 left. The made point-after-touchdown gave the Falcons a 7-0 lead.

Sophomore Zach Johnson connected on a 21-yard field goal with 8:40 left in the 2nd quarter, giving GCMS a 10-0 lead. After a Heyworth touchdown cut the lead to 10-7, Ross Royal had a 52-yard touchdown run with :38 left in the half. With Johnson’s PAT good, the halftime score was 17-7 in favor of GCMS.

Heyworth would score a touchdown in the 3rd quarter to make the score 17-13 after three. Tyler Hinshaw would score on a touchdown run with 4:09 left in the 4th quarter to give GCMS a 23-13 lead. Hinshaw’s 26-yard touchdown run late in the game would give the Falcons a 29-13 lead, but Heyworth wasn’t finished as they added a touchdown and made two-point conversion to make the score 29-21.

Due to some strange play at the end of the game, Heyworth earned a safety as time expired. The final score was 29-23, GCMS.

Ross Royal rushed for 80 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown. Tyler Hinshaw, bottled up most of the first half, came alive late in the game and scored two touchdowns and ended up with 49 yards on eight carries.

Ross Royal was eight of 11 on passing for 75 yards and two interceptions. Hinshaw had three receptions for 16 yards, while Austin Hornstein gained 30 yards on two catches.

The Hornets’ Kyle Schultz rushed 22 times for 150 yards and a 5-yard TD while Sam Asmus carried 13 times for 55 yards and a 5-yard score. Asmus also had a 54-yard TD catch from Josh Kuse, who completed three of five passes for 76 yards. Heyworth did have two costly fumbles that led to GCMS scores.

Special mention needs to be made of the overall play of underclassman Key-Shawn Girkin for GCMS.

The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game was Ross Royal, while the Falcon Fan of the Game was Teresa Wilson.

GCMS OUTLASTS TOUGH P-B-L IN HOMECOMING GAME – by Tom Benefiel (9-28-13)

It’s been said that all the girls are prettier at the dance when you win the homecoming game. If that’s the case, there will be supermodels at the GCMS homecoming after the host-Falcons outlast their Ford County foe to the east, Paxton-Buckley-Loda, in a classic of a ballgame, 21-20.

With 7:22 left in the first quarter, the Falcons (4-1) got on the board first with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ross Royal to Aaron Thomason. The made point-after-touchdown gave GCMS a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Hinshaw added a 40-yard touchdown run at 5:39 left in the second quarter, giving GCMS a 14-0 lead.

Super-senior running back Drew Schrodt – who led all rushers with 169 yards on 21 carries – helped the Panthers (4-1) move the ball up and down the field as P-B-L scored 20 unanswered points in the second and third quarters. However after the last touchdown, a missed P-A-T would be crucial down the stretch for the Panthers.

GCMS scored their final touchdown on a 69-yard Tyler Hinshaw run with 5:39 left in the third quarter. Sophomore Zach Johnson made the extra point giving the Falcons a slim 21-20 lead.

A stout GCMS defense and timely first downs by the Falcons kept the ball away from the powerful P-B-L offense the rest of the way. Schrodt gained only 33 of his 169 yards rushing in the second half.

The Falcons’ Ross Royal was nine of 15 passing for 99 yards with a touchdown and interception. P-B-L’s quarterback, Weston Weber threw only seven times, connecting on three passes and an interception.

Tyler Hinshaw had 139 yards on only eight carries for GCMS.

The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game was junior Tyler Hinshaw, while the Falcon Fan of the Game was Jerry Wismiller.

GCMS (3-1) got on the board with 8:07 left in the 1st quarter on their first offensive play that featured a Lucas Hixson-touchdown run of 48 yards. With the faked point-after-touchdown run for two points, the Falcons led 8-0.

In the second quarter, Tyler Hinshaw returned a Ridgeview (0-4) punt for a touchdown that made the score 15-0. Freshman Levi Davis had a nifty strip of the ball and return for a score with 1:40 left in the quarter that put GCMS up 22-0. After a failed fourth down attempt by the Mustangs deep in their own territory, Ross Royal ran the ball in for a touchdown that made the lead at halftime for the Falcons 28-0.

Aaron Thomason returned an interception of Ridgeview’s William Tinsley 76 yards for the Falcons final score. At this point, GCMS led 35-0.

Late in the fourth quarter, Ridgeview got on the board with a short touchdown run by Christian Fannin. The final score would be 35-6, Falcons.

Leading on the ground for GCMS was speedy Lucas Hixson with 129 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown. Ross Royal had an off night passing, throwing six times with no completions and one interception.

Ridgeview’s William Tinsley was eight of 21 passing for 115 yards with two interceptions, while senior Christian Fannin had 34 rushing attempts and 100 yards with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

HOST FALCONS HOLD ON TO BEAT LeROY  -- by Tom Benefiel (9-13-13)

Mistakes by LeRoy gives GCMS the edge early as the Falcons hold on to win over the Panthers, 20-14.

GCMS (2-1) was led by the receiving of Tyler Hinshaw and the excellent kicking of sophomore Zach Johnson. Johnson made two field goals and converted on both point-after-touchdown kicks to provide the margin of victory for the Falcons.

It was Johnson’s leg at 6:57 left in the first quarter that led to a 3-0 lead for GCMS after a LeRoy fumble deep in their own territory. The Panthers fumbled three times in the first half, but the Falcons could only muster three points off of their miscues as the halftime score stayed the same.

In the third quarter, Lucas Hixson had a nifty 15-yard touchdown dash with 8:59 left. With the conversion, the Falcons led 10-0. After a nice hookup between Ross and Drake Royal put the Falcons at the one yard line, Ross dove in for the one yard touchdown run with :14 left in the quarter. The third quarter ended with the Falcons leading 17-0.

However, LeRoy didn’t quit as they scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Between the Panthers’ scores, Zach Johnson added a 27-yard field goal for the Falcons. Good defense the rest of the way and a late Ross Royal interception sealed the 20-14 victory for GCMS.

Ross Royal was eight of 15 passing for 129 yards and an interception. Tyler Hinshaw caught five of those passes for 107 yards. Leading rushers for the Falcons were Ross Royal with 18 yards on 18 carries for a touchdown, and Lucas Hixson with eight carries for 17 yards and a score.

LeRoy’s Lane Lindstrom carried the ball 14 times for 119 yards and a touchdown, while Joe Chastain was five of eight passing for 74 yards and an interception.

LeRoy outgained GCMS on the ground 206 yards to 55.

The Pizza Hut Falcon Player of the Game was Tyler Hinshaw, while the Falcon Fan of the Game was Alfred Landau of Gibson City.

THE HISTORY OF GIBSON CITY-PAXTON FOOTBALL -- by Tom Benefiel (9-22-13)

OUR THANKS TO GCMS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH RYAN TOMPKINS FOR COMPILING THE STATISTICS

The 2013 season marks the 92nd consecutive year a football team from Gibson City and Paxton have played (including the Greyhounds' 1957 forfeit win).  The rivalry has been going on consecutively since the 1922 season, but was first played before the turn of the 20th century.

There have been at least 124 meetings (122 regular season, two IHSA playoffs) between the two teams since 1910.  For many of the pre-World War II seasons, Drummer High and Paxton High played two games.  Some years one game was on Armistice (November 11th) Day, the other held on Thanksgiving.  In later years there would be an earlier meeting with the second game coming on Armistice Day.  Both schools did this one last time after the war was over in 1945.

School names have evolved over the years.  While known originally as Gibson High until 1910, the Greyhounds became Drummer Township High School from 1911 until rural school consolidation changed the name to Gibson City High School in 1948.  The current consolidation with Melvin-Sibley precipitated a change to the GCMS Falcons in 1993.

Paxton High School and their Mustangs mascot would endure during the entire series until 1990 when they became the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Panthers.

Until changes in class size and conference participation separated the schools, the "big game" of the year was a meeting of both football teams at the end of the season.
